Build a mirror-image maze garden and a spinning pinwheel garden.
Two secret gardens. One is a perfect mirror. One only works if you spin it. Can guests tell which is which?

What you’ll build
Build two secret gardens side by side. In the first, design half a hedge maze and mirror it perfectly; in the second, build one quarter and spin it round the centre like a pinwheel. Prove each symmetry from above, then race someone through the maze from mirror-image entrances.
Finish line: Your mirror maze and pinwheel garden sit side by side, each symmetry is proved, and a maze race has been run.
Bonus challenge: Design a third garden with 4 mirror lines AND order 4 rotation. Then hold a family vote for the best garden.
You’ll need
- Leaves for hedges
- Flowers
- Path blocks
- Squared paper
You choose
- My two gardens' names
- Mirror maze: 1, 2 or 4 mirror lines
- Pinwheel style (swirl, windmill, galaxy…)
Stuck?
- Mirroring muddled? Count how far a block is from the mirror line and place its twin the same distance on the other side.
- Pinwheel has a mirror line? Make one arm of your quarter lean one way so the design only works by turning.
- Worried hedges will vanish? Leaves you place yourself don't decay.
