Time-trial the booster spacings, then build the City Express.

Powered rails are rocket boosters for minecarts. But how many do you really need? Time trials start now.

  • New skill Building powered rail lines
  • Level 3 · Dream City
  • Difficulty Beginner
  • Mode Creative
  • Time 35–45 min
  • Ages 13+

What you’ll build

Set up a fair tournament on a straight test track, trying powered rails at different spacings. Time three runs for each, use the middle time to work out speed, crown the best setup, then build the City Express between two districts using the winning spacing.

Finish line: Your booster tournament has a winner backed by timed speeds, and the City Express runs on the winning spacing.

Bonus challenge: Turn part of the line into a coaster. How many powered rails does a cart need to climb 10 blocks without stopping?

You’ll need

  • Rails and powered rails
  • Redstone blocks or torches
  • A minecart
  • A timer with seconds

You choose

  • Spacings in my tournament
  • My tournament rules (what stays the same)
  • What 'best' means to me (fastest, or fewest boosters)

Stuck?

  • Cart not speeding up? Powered rails only boost when powered by a redstone torch, lever or redstone block beside them.
  • Cart won't launch? Start it on a powered rail with a solid block right behind it.
  • Times all over the place? Run each spacing three times and use the middle time.

For grown-ups
