Same pickaxe, same enchantments, one upgrade. Is netherite really faster? Time to race your own tool.

What you’ll build
Build two matching test walls, then time your diamond pickaxe clearing the first one. Upgrade it to netherite at the smithing table, name it on an anvil, race the second wall and work out whether netherite was really faster.
Finish line: Your named netherite pickaxe has two race times and a percentage speed-up to show for it.
Bonus challenge: Run each race 3 times and use your middle time for each pickaxe. Did your answer change from the single race?
You’ll need
- A diamond pickaxe
- A netherite upgrade template
- A netherite ingot
- A smithing table
- A timer

Stuck?
- Build the walls from stone or deepslate. Netherrack breaks too fast to time fairly.
- Upgrading at the smithing table keeps all your enchantments.
- Keep everything else the same in both races: same block, same pickaxe, same spot.
