What you’ll build
Set sail west toward the sunset with an empty map, and keep going until you spot land. Climb the highest point, fill in your map, trace the coastline and estimate its area, then build a small turf camp and sail home to present your find.
Finish line: You've found and named a new island, filled in its map, estimated its area and built a turf camp.
Bonus challenge: Plan a second voyage to a new island and draw both trips on one sea chart. Which island would make the better home?
You’ll need
- A boat
- Empty maps
- Squared paper
- Turf blocks (moss and grass)
You choose
- My island's name
- Where I land
- My camp's job: fishing, wood or ship repair
Stuck?
- Map blank or off the edge? A map only covers the area around where you open it. Open a new one on the island.
- Sailing in circles? The sun sets in the west, so keep it ahead of you.
- Area estimate tricky? Count full squares, then add half for every part-square.
