Beat the ground-floor tax with a timber house whose upper floors stick out.
The town taxes you on your ground floor only. Clever builders found a loophole: build bigger as you go UP.

- Time 35–45 min

What you’ll build
Dodge the ground-floor tax with a timber-framed townhouse that grows bigger as it goes up. Build a stone base and a log frame with pale infill, stack jettied floors that stick out over the lane, then measure every floor to reveal how much space you sneaked.
Finish line: Your three-storey timber house has two jettied floors, and you know how much space you sneaked past the taxman.
Bonus challenge: Build a rival house across a narrow lane so the top floors nearly touch. How wide is the lane at the ground, and how wide at the top?
You’ll need
- Logs
- Calcite or white concrete
- Stone
- Stairs or fences for brackets
You choose
- Sides that jetty (stick out) over the lane
- Frame wood and infill colour
- Bracket design under each overhang
Stuck?
- Frame not standing out? Use dark logs against a pale infill so the timbers pop.
- Overhang looks like it's floating? Add stair or fence brackets underneath each jetty.
- Area coming out small? Length from coordinates is the difference plus 1, because both end blocks count.
