Log the ruin's glass, build a code window, see which glass blocks light.

The ruin's glass isn't random. Every coloured pane you brush up is a letter. Together they spell a message.

  • New skill Crafting stained and tinted glass
  • Level 5 · Mysteries & Monsters
  • Difficulty Intermediate
  • Mode Survival
  • Time 40–50 min
  • Ages 13+

What you’ll build

Log the coloured glass you brushed from the ruins, then invent a colour alphabet and build a stained glass code window at your base. Hold a light showdown with three tiny huts roofed in clear, stained and tinted glass. Finally, dare a family member to crack your window.

Finish line: Your stained glass code window is built and you know which glass blocks the most light.

Bonus challenge: Make a two-pane code: every letter is a pair of colours. How many symbols can 16 colours make now, and can anyone still crack it?

You’ll need

  • Sand and a furnace
  • Dyes
  • Amethyst shards
  • Your brushed glass panes
  • A family member to crack it

You choose

  • My secret word
  • My colour alphabet's first three letters
  • Window shape: arch, circle or tall slit

Stuck?

  • Stained glass is 8 glass around 1 dye. Smelt sand in a furnace to make the glass first.
  • Tinted glass is 4 amethyst shards around 1 glass. It's the only glass that blocks light.
  • Only a few panes from the ruin? They're random finds, so brush more gravel or use any colours you have.

For grown-ups
