Build a 200-block Roman road in layers, with milestones and a branch road.
Roman surveyors hated curves. Build a road so straight it slices through a hill instead of going round it.
- New skill Keeping a road straight with coordinates
- Level 7 · Time Travellers
- Difficulty Intermediate
- Mode Creative
- Time 45–60 min
- Ages 13+
What you’ll build
Lock one coordinate and build a dead-straight Roman road, layer by layer, slicing right through any hill in the way. Add drainage, numbered milestones and a diagonal branch road, then race the grid route against the shortcut.
Finish line: Your 200-block road has layers, drainage and milestones, and you've raced the diagonal shortcut.
Bonus challenge: Build a second diagonal using a 5-across, 12-up staircase. Predict its length with the shortcut trick before you build (hint: 5, 12, ___).
You’ll need
- Big stones or cobblestone
- Gravel
- Paving blocks
- Slabs
- A calculator
You choose
- My road's name: Via
- Paving block and kerb style
- My bet: the diagonal saves ___ blocks
Stuck?
- Road wandering? Turn on Show Coordinates (a world setting) and keep either X or Z the same all the way.
- Gravel falls if there's nothing under it, so lay the big stones first.
- Diagonal looking messy? Repeat the same step pattern every time: 3 across, then 4 up.
For grown-ups
