Build a 24 × 24 Roman-style mosaic floor with a border and a hidden secret.
Roman floors hid whole pictures in tiny tiles. Make one so good your family walks right over the secret.

What you’ll build
Design a big square mosaic on paper, then lay it as a floor with a repeating border all the way round. Fill in your centre picture tile by tile and hide a secret letter using two colours that look almost the same.
Finish line: Your mosaic floor has a neat repeating border, an original picture and a secret your family walked right over.
Bonus challenge: Make a welcome-mat mosaic at your door with your own message, like the famous "Beware of the dog" floor found at Pompeii.
You’ll need
- Coloured concrete or wool
- Squared paper
- Coloured pencils
You choose
- My centre picture (my own animal or sea creature)
- Border pattern: wave, key or zigzag
- My secret letter or symbol
Stuck?
- Border not meeting at the corners? Start each side from a corner and work toward the middle.
- Losing your place? Build one row at a time and tick each row off on your design.
- Secret too easy to see? Pick two shades that are even closer, like light grey and white.
