Mission 3: a first house and the magic of 5 × 5

Sample page: Page for parents

Mission 3 is a first house: a 5×5 home next to the dog’s. It’s the first mission that’s really about measuring, and the first time a plan meets reality.

What the mission builds

  • Measuring and counting. Count out five blocks one way and five the other, then mark the corners.
  • Square numbers. 5 × 5 = 25 floor blocks. A great moment to notice why it’s called a “square” number.
  • Design decisions. Where do the door and windows go, and why? There’s no wrong answer, only a reason.
  • Comparing plan and reality. The Plan & Log page asks how many blocks were planned and how many were used.

A conversation starter

“Which room in our home would you design differently, and how?”

Or a sneaky maths one: “Why did the wall need fewer blocks once you added a door?” If counting gets muddled in the game, suggest placing a different coloured block on each corner first.

Try it off-screen

Use masking tape to mark a 5×5 square on the floor, one big step per block. Can the whole family fit inside the “house”? Where would the bed go?
