Build a rainbow arch bridge over a river, then put real arches to the test.
A river splits your city. Span it with a giant rainbow arch, then prove arches really are the strongest shape.
- New skill Building a semicircular arch
- Level 3 · Dream City
- Difficulty Beginner
- Mode Creative
- Time 35–45 min
- Ages 13+
What you’ll build
Plot a semicircle and turn it into a rainbow arch bridge over a river, copying the arch back in seven colours. Add a deck, railings and lamps, then run a real desk test with paper cards and coins to prove whether arches truly carry more weight.
Finish line: Your rainbow arch bridge spans the water, and your desk test has a clear winner.
Bonus challenge: Build a second, smaller arch beside the first. Give its span, rise and ratio, and explain why the ratio didn't change.
You’ll need
- Wool or concrete in 7 colours
- Railings and lamps
- Two thin cards
- Two books and some coins
You choose
- My bridge's name
- Span: 12, 16 or 20 m
- My bet: the arch card holds ___ times as many coins as the flat one
Stuck?
- Card test unfair? Keep the cards, book gap and coin spot the same, and run each card three times.
- No river nearby? Dig a trench and fill it with water buckets.
- Arch lopsided? Plot from the centre and mirror each height on both sides.
For grown-ups
