Bridge the river with a beam bridge that follows real engineering rules.

The river cuts your City in two. Minecraft blocks float in mid-air, but your bridge must obey real rules.

  • New skill Building pillars, beams and a deck
  • Level 3 · Dream City
  • Difficulty Beginner
  • Mode Creative
  • Time 35–45 min
  • Ages 13+

What you’ll build

Try a desk test with a ruler and books to feel how beams bend, then measure your river with coordinates. Choose equal spans, size your beams like a real engineer, and build pillars, beams and a deck. Finish by sailing a boat underneath and holding an opening ceremony.

Finish line: Your named beam bridge has equal spans and real-sized beams, with boats sailing safely underneath.

Bonus challenge: The Lake Pontchartrain Causeway in the USA is about 38 km long, with spans of about 17 m. About how many spans is that? Guess first!

You’ll need

  • Stone or concrete for pillars
  • Deck blocks
  • A boat
  • A ruler and two stacks of books

You choose

  • My bridge's name
  • Span between pillars (5–15 m): ___ m
  • Pillar style and deck material

Stuck?

  • Spans uneven? Divide the river width by the number of spans and shift pillars until every gap matches.
  • Boat hitting the deck? Raise the deck to leave plenty of room above the water.
  • River width off? Stand at the water's edge on each bank and subtract the matching X or Z values.

For grown-ups
