Build an automatic pasture gate that lets you through but keeps animals in.
A gate that swings open for you and stays shut on every sneaky cow trying to escape. Will it hold?
- New skill Powering a fence gate
- Level 6 · Inventor's Lab
- Difficulty Intermediate
- Mode Creative
- Time 30–45 min
- Ages 13+
What you’ll build
Fence a pasture full of animals and add a gate that swings open by itself when you walk up. You'll work out why the inside needs a button instead of a plate, then run escape tests with hungry animals crowding the gate.
Finish line: Your pasture gate opens for you every trip and keeps every sneaky animal inside.
Bonus challenge: Build a second pasture next door with its own gate, and a note block that dings when either gate opens. Can you tell which one rang?
You’ll need
- Fence and a fence gate
- Stone pressure plate
- A button
- Animal spawn eggs
- Wheat
You choose
- The animals in my pasture
- My pasture's name
- My bet: escapes during the wheat test
Stuck?
- Use a stone pressure plate: wooden plates can also be set off by dropped items.
- Animals can step on plates too, so keep the plate outside and use a button inside.
- Gate shuts on you? Walk through quickly, or try a wooden button, which stays on a little longer.
