Build a robot that adds two bits and shows the answer in two lamps.
The Lab robot has never added anything. Today it tries 1 + 1. Will it say 2… or blow a fuse?
- New skill Building a half adder
- Level 6 · Inventor's Lab
- Difficulty Intermediate
- Mode Creative
- Time 50–70 min
- Ages 13+
What you’ll build
Build a giant robot that can add. Two input levers feed an XOR gate for the ones lamp and an AND gate for the twos lamp, with repeaters stopping signals leaking back. Test every sum and watch 1 + 1 become 10 in secret code.
Finish line: Your robot adds any two bits correctly and lights the right lamps for all four sums.
Bonus challenge: Make it a full adder: add a third lever (carry in) so it can do 1 + 1 + 1. Hint: two half adders, with their 2s outputs joined into one line.
You’ll need
- Levers
- Comparators
- Redstone torches
- Repeaters
- Redstone lamps
- Redstone dust
You choose
- My robot's name
- Lamp colours for the 2s and 1s lamps
- My bet: what 1 + 1 looks like
Stuck?
- Wrong lamps lighting? Repeaters work as one-way valves: put them where the two gates share wires.
- Test each gate on its own first, then join them.
- 1 + 1 should light only the twos lamp. That's 2 written in binary.
For grown-ups
