Build a stone circle with sunrise and sunset markers, then time a day.
No clocks. No phones. No calendar. Just the sun. Build a giant stone ring that catches it rising.
- New skill Building a circle with marker stones
- Level 7 · Time Travellers
- Difficulty Intermediate
- Mode Creative
- Time 45–60 min
- Ages 13+
What you’ll build
Build a giant ring of standing stones in an open field, then use the real sun to place your sunrise, sunset and noon markers. Finish by timing a full day and night from the centre of your circle to see how long a day really lasts.
Finish line: Your stone circle has sunrise, sunset and noon markers, and you've timed a whole day from the centre.
Bonus challenge: Watch where the moon rises tonight. Does it come up over your sunrise stone too? Add a moonrise marker if it doesn't.
You’ll need
- Stone blocks
- A stopwatch
- A calculator
You choose
- My circle's name
- Number of standing stones
- My guess for one Minecraft day: ___ minutes
Stuck?
- Not sure which way is east? Turn on Show Coordinates: east is the direction where X gets bigger.
- The sun always rises in the east and sets in the west here, so check your markers against X.
- Missed sunrise? Keep building and wait for the next one. A full day takes about 20 minutes.
For grown-ups
