What you’ll build
Plan a branch mine, guess how many steps it'll take, then dig a staircase all the way down to Y −58 near the bottom of the world. Build a lit mining base with a bed, carve the main tunnel and start your first side branches, mapping every ore you spot.
Finish line: Your staircase reaches Y −58, your mining base is lit and your first branches are on the map.
Bonus challenge: Build a speedy way home: a ladder shaft or a minecart track. Time the trip up both ways. How many seconds does your shortcut save?

Stuck?
- Never dig straight down. A staircase lets you see what's below before you step on it.
- Hear lava popping? Block the wall in front of you before you mine another block.
- Bedrock can't be mined. If you hit it, you've gone as deep as you can.
